Which wood species should you choose for your kitchen worktop?
At ilicut, we offer you two options.
The authenticity of solid wood
Solid wood remains the reference material for kitchen worktops. Authentic and warm, it adds character to your space while offering proven durability. Oak, beech, walnut, acacia… each species brings its own personality. Beyond aesthetics, mechanical properties vary from one species to another. The choice is made according to density, hardness and style criteria, detailed below.
MDF, compact, OSB, laminate: alternatives to solid wood
MDF, compact, OSB and laminate are relevant alternatives to solid wood. Each material offers distinct technical properties and meets specific needs in terms of durability, aesthetics and budget. These options are detailed further below in a dedicated section.
How to choose a solid wood kitchen worktop?
It’s decided: the worktop of your new kitchen will be made of solid wood. Here are a few key points to consider when choosing your wooden worktop.
Choose a dense and hard wood species
For a wood to be suitable for use as a worktop, it must offer sufficient density and hardness. That’s why our selection includes only hardwood species (as opposed to softwoods such as pine): oak, beech, birch, acacia, walnut, maple, cherry, etc.
Choose the wood that matches your kitchen style
Once this distinction is made, the choice of hardwood species for your wooden kitchen worktop should be based purely on aesthetic criteria. The color scheme of your kitchen can also influence your selection. Here are our recommendations:
- Timeless kitchen: oak, with its warm tone and pronounced grain, enhances any kitchen style.
- Scandinavian-style kitchen: light woods such as beech, birch or maple bring brightness and softness.
- Industrial-style kitchen: dark woods such as acacia and walnut create an elegant contrast.
- Contemporary kitchen: walnut and cherry provide depth and character.
- Exotic-style kitchen: bamboo, acacia or cherry worktops add a distinctive touch.
- White and wood kitchen: light wood worktops are recommended. Oak, beech or maple pair particularly well with white.
- Black and wood kitchen: both options work. Dark woods such as walnut or acacia enhance elegance, while lighter woods like birch or oak create strong contrast and add brightness.
The type and thickness of the worktop
There are two main methods for manufacturing solid wood kitchen worktops:
- continuous stave worktops: each wooden board runs along the entire length of the worktop (Rustic and Cabinetmaker ranges);
- finger-jointed worktops: shorter wooden staves assembled lengthwise and widthwise (Natural and Premium ranges).
Although finger-jointed worktops are often considered slightly more resistant, we recommend choosing solely based on aesthetics, as both manufacturing methods are robust enough for kitchen use.
Regarding thickness, opt for panels of at least 2.6 cm. This thickness ensures optimal resistance to everyday constraints and helps prevent deformation over time.
How to choose the right material for your kitchen worktop?
If you are looking for an alternative to solid wood, several materials offer properties suitable for kitchen use.
MDF for a modern finish
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a wood fiber panel with a homogeneous structure and perfectly smooth surface, allowing various finishes to be applied: oil, paint, varnish.
It is suitable for kitchen worktops when protected against moisture. This material offers excellent value for money for custom projects.
Compact for enhanced durability
Compact laminate is produced by high-pressure compression of multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with resin. This process gives the material high density and excellent resistance to impacts, moisture and scratches.
Available in a wide range of colors and finishes, it is a robust and long-lasting solution.
OSB for an industrial aesthetic
OSB (Oriented Strand Board) consists of oriented wood strands compressed together. Its raw appearance, with visible strands, creates a strong industrial look. This material requires a protective finish (varnish or oil) for kitchen use. It is ideal for contemporary or workshop-style projects seeking a bold aesthetic.
Laminate for a wide variety of designs
Laminate combines a core panel (MDF or particle board) with a decorative resin surface. This coating provides satisfactory resistance to daily use and comes in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures.
Laminate allows you to replicate the appearance of wood, stone or concrete at a controlled cost. However, edge finishing must be done carefully to ensure waterproofing.
