Board or wood panel: what’s the difference?
A wood board refers to any rectangular, flat piece. Generally, it is raw, made from a single piece of wood or a few glued solid staves. It’s ideal for simple applications and modest fit-out projects.
Conversely, a wood panel is a composed piece:
- either by assembling solid staves (edge-glued);
- or from a reconstituted material (plywood, MDF, OSB, laminate).
The panel is therefore designed to offer greater width and reinforced stability. In practice, wood panels prove more versatile for interior fit-out projects. This is, in fact, the core of our custom wood panel offering.
Choosing the right wood panels for your interior project
The selection of a wood panel depends on its use, exposure (dry room, humid room) and the desired visual result. On one hand, solid-wood panels showcase the grain and warmth of wood; on the other, engineered wood panels combine stability, generous sizes and varied decors.
Choosing the right type of solid-wood panel
At Ilicut, there are three versions of custom solid-wood panels.
- Finger-jointed, edge-glued panels
These panels are made of small solid staves jointed in length, then edge-glued. They offer very good stability. Their pattern highlights the wood grain, sometimes with a rhythm created by the finger joints.
We offer two ranges of finger-jointed edge-glued panels: the Nature range and the Premium range. The first emphasizes variety in tones and grain within a species, while retaining the wood’s singularities (presence of knots, sapwood, or medullary rays). The second uses more homogeneous staves for a more uniform overall appearance.
- Continuous-stave (full-stave) panels
Here, the panel is assembled from long staves without visible finger joints. The grain runs the full length, delivering a high-end, very consistent look.
As with finger-jointed edge-glued panels, we offer two ranges of continuous-stave panels: the Rustic range, with possible natural features (knots, sapwood, pinholes), and the Cabinetmaking range, where the staves are selected free of defects for a perfectly even appearance.
- Live Edge panels
Live Edge keeps the natural edges along both lengths for a more organic look. This type of panel showcases the character of solid wood.
Depending on how it’s made, it may be a single piece of wood or a continuous-stave panel.

Engineered wood panels: another solution for your interior project
This category includes all panels made from processed wood. We are no longer talking about solid wood, but wood-based composites. Like solid-wood panels, these materials are used to build furniture and fit out interior spaces.
- Custom plywood panels
Made by stacking cross-laminated veneers (wood sheets) whose fibres are oriented perpendicular to the previous layer, plywood panels provide both lightness and stiffness. Unlike most wood panels, some plywood—such as marine plywood—can be used outdoors under certain conditions.
- Custom multi-ply panels
These panels are a high-end variant of plywood. They also consist of multiple layers, but each layer is made of solid wood rather than veneer. The core plies are finger-jointed staves, while the outer plies (the visible faces) are continuous staves. Ilicut offers 3- or 5-ply panels in oak, beech, spruce, larch and bamboo.
- Custom wood-fibre (MDF) panels
Mainly used in their medium-density version (MDF: Medium Density Fiberboard), these panels are made of wood fibres. The fibres are obtained by grinding, then bonded together with a synthetic binder. MDF panels can have raw or veneered faces. They are smooth and can even be coloured by tinting the fibres. Within this family, Valchromat stands out: it is a through-dyed MDF, with colour homogeneity right to the core of the material.
- OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panels
Easy to recognize, OSB panels are made of large glued wood strands oriented in multiple directions. Several grades are available depending on moisture resistance and stability. They are used mainly in construction but can also be used occasionally in interior decoration.
- Compact laminate panels
Also called HPL (High Pressure Laminate), these panels are made from compressed kraft paper sheets impregnated with phenolic resin, then covered with a decorative layer. This material offers excellent resistance to impacts, water and stains. Ilicut offers HPL panels made from recycled kraft paper, compressed and dyed black, then covered with two melamine resin faces available in several decors.
Which wood species should you choose for your interior project?
The choice of wood species depends primarily on its use and location in the home. For example, softwoods (spruce, Douglas fir, larch, poplar, birch) are better suited to non-structural uses (shelves, claustras, small furniture, etc.).
Hard or medium-hard woods (oak, beech, ash, maple, walnut, acacia) are suitable for work surfaces (worktop, desk, table, etc.) and stair treads, as they withstand impacts and loads better. In humid rooms (kitchen, bathroom), favour naturally durable exotic species against water (acacia, bamboo, rubberwood).
In terms of aesthetics, light woods (maple, ash, birch) visually enlarge the space, while dark woods (walnut, cherry, acacia) add warmth and contrast. The essentials (oak, beech) are timeless and versatile.

Custom wood-panel cutting is carried out in our Burgundy workshop. Orders are then delivered to your home or jobsite, by appointment, via specialized carriers.
Wood maintenance is essential to avoid premature damage or warping. First, wood should be stored in a dry, shaded and ventilated place. Then, be sure to apply a finishing product (oil, varnish, wax) to all edges of the panel or board.
