Is oak resistant to water?

Oak has a natural water resistance that is superior to most wood species. This resistance comes from its dense structure and high tannin content, which give it natural water-repellent properties.

However, oak’s water resistance depends on several factors:

  • Indoor use: excellent resistance to occasional water splashes
  • Ambient humidity: handles normal humidity fluctuations well
  • Prolonged contact: may deteriorate if exposed to constant moisture
  • Applied finish: varnish or oil significantly improves protection

For interior use, oak is perfectly suitable for kitchens, provided a proper finish is applied. Its behavior against moisture makes it a preferred choice for worktops, shelves, and furniture moderately exposed to domestic humidity.
