At @lilly_and_thefrenchie, an interior decorator and content creator, the flow between the bedrooms (downstairs) and the living/dining room (upstairs) is reimagined around a U-shaped staircase. This choice saves space, softens the climb, and adds a graphic signature. The concrete & wood pairing balances structural finesse with visual warmth: concrete provides strength and slender lines, while wood enhances a chalet spirit and creates a contemporary atmosphere without betraying the home’s period character.
Custom treads for a U-shaped staircase
The wooden stair treads were made of 40 mm Premium solid beech, cut to the millimetre in Ilicut’s French production workshop. The edges forming the nosing received C2-1 machining: a subtle round-over that improves underfoot comfort, protects the arrises over time, and refines the lines.
The “raw-wood look” oiled finish protects the wood over the long term while preserving beech’s natural tone, delivering a matte, easy-care result that’s ideal for a staircase in a high-traffic area.
Aesthetics & materials: metal, concrete, wood
This interior stair renovation revolves around a trio of concrete / wood / metal. Concrete anchors the architectural base, wood brings rhythm and warmth, while metal lightens the whole. The U-shape energises perspectives, creates a comfortable pivot landing, and stages the light.
