In this project, Maria transformed an alcove into a storage and decorative space using custom-made solid oak shelves. A seemingly simple project, but one in which the choice of wood, dimensions and finish makes all the difference.
DESIGNING AN ALCOVE WITH SOLID WOOD SHELVES
Often underused, alcoves nevertheless offer considerable potential for interior design. Here, the alcove was optimised with several solid oak shelves adjusted to the specific dimensions of the recess.
Oak immediately brings warmth and character to the space. With its soft colour and distinctive grain, it creates a subtle contrast with the light-coloured walls and highlights everyday items such as books, picture frames, plants and decorative objects. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this layout also makes the space more functional. The alcove becomes a practical storage area organised over several levels, without making the room feel cluttered.
CUSTOM-MADE SOLID OAK SHELVES WITH ILICUT
To fit the alcove perfectly, the shelves (88 × 33 × 1.8 cm) were ordered to measure using the Ilicut configurator. Maria was therefore able to make full use of the alcove’s width and depth without having to cut the wood herself. Unlike standard shelves, the boards fit perfectly into the space, creating a clean and harmonious result. The Natural oil finish applied in the workshop enhances the wood while protecting it for everyday use.
