A brilliantly executed family DIY project: Roberta, Damien and their two sons designed and built a custom entryway unit perfectly suited to their space… and their budget!
Nailing the entryway
Roberta and Damien had long been searching for an entryway unit with very specific dimensions to make the most of their available space, while respecting door openings and circulation.
But after visiting countless stores, they realized that standard furniture was either too wide, too deep, or simply not suitable. As for “custom furniture” companies, the prices quickly became an obstacle. That’s when the idea was born: build it themselves — with the help of their two sons, Thomas (8) and Martin (5), who proudly helped apply the varnish!
Custom furniture accessible to everyone
For this project, they ordered poplar plywood panels from Ilicut for the structure and doors, as well as OSB boards for the shelves. The unit’s dimensions: L: 130.6 cm / W: 37 cm / Thickness: 1.5–2.2 cm / H: 98 cm.
Thanks to custom-cut panels, building furniture to their own measurements became possible — even without being seasoned DIYers! And the result exceeded their expectations.
The piece features a clean, simple look, highlighted by the warm medium wood-toned varnish that enhances the natural grain of the poplar. Sliding doors ensure easy access even in tight spaces.
